Buddy Miller and some of his other silver-haired guitar-playing buddies (Bill Frisell, Greg Leisz, and Marc Ribot) formed a band, brought in some great guest singers (including Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin, and Lee Ann Womack), and made a record that is a complete knockout, if you like this sort of music.
I read somewhere that they were trying to figure out what to call themselves and Patty Griffin looked around the room at the four of them and said something like, “How about the Silver Majestics?” They ended up as The Majestic Silver Strings, and they essentially recorded the album live in Buddy Miller’s home studio.
I could have picked any number of tunes off the album, but for our Psalm/Psong purposes, the frontrunner ended up being Shawn Colvin’s cover of Lefty Frizzell’s classic tune “That’s the Way Love Goes.” If ears were popcorn, Colvin’s voice would be melted butter. I’ve seen her in concert where she has sung this song without such an extraordinary band behind her, and she still nails it. The Majestics give it an added dimension of Wow-ness. The video isn’t with the same backup band, but it’s close enough. Listen. Wow. Repeat as necessary.
