Psalm/Psong for April 7 – “The One Who Knows” by Dar Williams

Dar Williams released a retrospective album this year called “Many Great Companions.” This psong, “The One Who Knows,” is from one of her earlier records, but on the new album she performs it with the incomparable Mary Chapin Carpenter. This video isn’t the best version of this psong, but it has a great introduction, which is well worth hearing.

Today is my mother’s birthday, so I’m posting this psong about parenting to honor the countless ways in which she has been and continues to be “The One Who Knows” for people of all ages. This extraordinary woman has almost 800 friends on Facebook from all over the world, and they really ARE her friends! And that’s probably a fraction of the people who are part of the web of love she has woven through the universe. Her light’s been shining for 81 years, and it’s brighter than ever. Happy birthday, Mom.

Lyrics to “The One Who Knows”:

Time it was I had a dream
You’re the dream come true
If I had the world to give
I’d give it all to you.
I’ll take you to the mountains
I will take you to the sea
I’ll show you how this life became
A miracle to me.

You’ll fly away
but take my hand until that day
So when they ask how far love goes
When my job’s done, you’ll be the one who knows.

All the things you treasure most
Will be the hardest won
I will watch you struggle on
Before the answers come
But I won’t make it harder
I’ll be there to cheer you on
I’ll shine the light that guides you down
The road you’re walking on

You’ll fly away
but take my hand until that day
So when they ask how far love goes
When my job’s done, you’ll be the one who knows.

Before the mountains call to you
Before you leave this home
I will teach your heart to trust
As I will teach my own
But sometimes I will ask the moon
Where it shined upon you last
And shake my head and laugh and say
It all went by so fast

You’ll fly away
but take my hand until that day
So when they ask how far love goes
When my job’s done, you’ll be the one who knows.

  1. Happy Birthday [and many, many more] to Joy’s remarkable mother!!! Your comments on your daughter’s comments on life are one of the things I look forward to when I read Crooked Line. Thanks, Joy, for marking this day.

  2. That song kills me every time.

Great, Joy, be the best child in the family. Way to go.

    • Mwahahaha! Oh Jimmy, there’s no best child, remember? As I recall, we’re all uniquely amazing. At least, that’s what it says on MY birth certificate. xoxoBells

  3. I love Dar Williams, but somehow I’d never heard this one before. Lovely.
